The Hosting Comparison Guide

How shared, managed, VPS, cloud and edge hosting actually differ on performance, control and operational burden, with a decision framework for choosing the right type before you shop for a provider.

What you get:

  • The five hosting categories described in plain terms, including who each one is actually for
  • A side by side table across ten dimensions that matter operationally, not in marketing copy
  • Where site performance actually comes from, and which parts hosting does not fix
  • A seven-question decision framework, with a map for reading your answers
  • A 12-point evaluation checklist to put to any provider, in writing
  • A migration sequence for moving without a bad week

Almost every hosting decision is made backwards

Someone compares vendors first, gets buried in feature matrices, and picks based on which control panel looked friendliest. The vendor is the last decision, not the first. Category comes first, because the category sets your ceiling on performance, your floor on cost, and, most importantly, how much operational work lands on you every month. Two providers in the same category are far more alike than two providers in different ones.

The dimension people forget

Operational burden. A VPS at a lower monthly price than managed hosting is not cheaper if somebody on your side now owns patching, backups, and the 2am restore. The comparison table prices that in explicitly, because it is the difference that shows up six months later rather than on the invoice.

Hosting is not always the problem

A meaningful share of slow sites are slow for reasons a migration will not touch: unoptimized images, a bloated theme, too many third party scripts. The guide is explicit about where performance actually comes from, so you can rule that out before you spend a weekend moving hosts and find the numbers unchanged.
